Ambassador Leandro Rizzuto, Whose Family Founded Conair, To Lead 82nd Annual Columbus Day Parade

Recognition celebrates an immigrant family’s entrepreneurial legacy that helped shape the American beauty industry.

On Oct. 12, Ambassador Leandro (Lee) Rizzuto, who father and grandfather founded Conair, will help lead the 82nd Annual Columbus Day Parade up Fifth Avenue in New York City in recognition of the family’s contributions in the field of business, statesmanship and philanthropy.

Leandro P. Rizzuto, Conair’s co-founder and Chairman of the Board, died in December 2017.

Rizzuto’s recognition also celebrates an Italian American success story of an immigrant family whose entrepreneurial legacy helped shape the American beauty industry.

The Start of the Pistol-Shaped Hair Dryer

In 1959, the Rizzuto family started Conair by selling hair rollers and dryers. To fund the new company, Rizzuto’s father sold his Cadillac, paid off his debt and jumpstarted the business with the hundred dollars he had left in his pocket. His son, Leandro Rizzuto Jr., joined the family business, moving from warehouse operations to senior vice president, expanding the company’s global footprint to over 125 countries and personally earning 25 US patent and bringing to market over 1,000 new products.

Conair became known for growth and innovation, creating tools for women that would enable them to achieve salon results in their own homes. One of these was a revolutionary pistol-shaped hair dryer, which helped reshape the haircare industry. Conair continued to innovate and improve their devices and expanded into personal care, health and beauty, grooming tools, cookware and kitchen electrics. With a contemporary design focus, Conair quickly grew into one of the largest consumer product manufacturers in the world, with more than 25 brand names across six continents.

Rizzuto was also known for his work as chairman of the Professional Beauty Association; director of the North American Beauty Events LLC, the producer of Cosmoprof NA, a beauty trade show; and creator of Style Source Magazine. He stepped away from active corporate management as he moved into government service, being appointed US Consul General in Bermuda in 2020 and subsequently nominated and sworn in as the US Ambassador to the Organization of American States.
